The first milestone we aim for is self-identification — the ability to say, write, and recognize one’s own name. It may sound small, but for a child whose name was never written down, it’s a declaration: “I exist.” With regular engagement, we see noticeable changes. Children become more expressive, more emotionally aware, and more curious.
Children of ragpickers, daily wage earners, and homeless families are often left out of India’s formal education system. Their lives are constantly in motion — shifting from one pavement, one plastic shelter, one city corner to another. There are no school admissions, no birth certificates, and usually, no understanding that a school could be a part of their life. Even if a government school is nearby, fear, unfamiliarity, or previous humiliation keeps these children away. Some are pulled into labor by the age of six. Others spend their childhood watching younger siblings. Bal Sanskar Shala exists to address this painful silence — we don’t expect them to find a classroom; we go to them, sit with them, and let them rediscover their right to learn.
Our approach is deeply informal but thoughtfully structured. We use storytelling, songs, drawing, games, rhythm, and repetition to create interest in letters and numbers. There are no rigid uniforms or attendance registers. Children can come as they are — dusty feet, open hearts. Volunteers trained by us handle the sessions with warmth and consistency. Slowly, children who had never held a pencil start writing their names.
Bal Sanskar Shala is Anitya Welfare Society’s field-based education program designed for children who grow up without classrooms, uniforms, or even the idea of school. These children — mostly from ragpicker families or informal settlements — are born into conditions where survival takes priority over schooling. Through this initiative, we build simple, flexible, and joyful learning spaces right where the children live. Under trees, beside tents, or in community courtyards — our sessions begin with a smile and end with a song, making learning feel like belonging.
